The preservation of health

A happy heart is good

Years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell
you my story. Back then I was a sophomore in college trying to make the
football team, but I developed a painful leg condition known as "sciatica."
In my case it came on following an injury. The pain in my back and leg was
so intense that I couldn't walk easily,
sit still, stand up straight, and sometimes I
couldn't even concentrate or think straight.
Doctors did tests after tests, including a MRI and a myelogram
(shooting dye in my spine), and diagnosed me with a herniated disc. The
surgeon told me to stop playing football, stop exercising and rest, and the
disc would "get better by itself or get worse". Well I found out nothing
gets better by itself, it always gets worse. One year later, I had so much
pain and tingling in my left leg, I developed what is known as foot drop. My
leg would not work properly. |

Another MRI was done, and now I had a ruptured
disc. I considered surgery, that was the only option according to the
surgeon. After getting three different opinions from three different
surgeons, I chose a surgeon that was going to do the minimum, I had low back
surgery. After surgery, I continued to have almost the same amount of pain
in my back and leg. I was 20 years old, and I
couldn't do anything! My Mother and Father were very concerned, they didn't
know where to turn. A family friend told us about a Chiropractor and how he
might be able to help me. I was ready for anything that might help. After
getting into the car and laying in the back seat, my parents drove me to the
Chiropractor. I hate to admit it, but yes, there were tears. My back was
hurting!
The Chiropractor took me in right away and did some tests. He told me the
tests showed that I had several misalignments (subluxations) in my spine that were putting
pressure and tension on my nerve system (even after the surgery) and that it
was serious. He also was confident that he could help me with a series of
adjustments that would alleviate the pressure and allow my body to heal
itself. I asked if it would hurt and he assured me that it would not. He put
me on a special table and positioned my body for the adjustment. He
explained what he was going to do and what I would feel. I was
at first startled but it didn't hurt, and better than that, I felt much
better! I still had some pain but I could move, walk and sit better. It
seemed like a miracle, I dragged my leg in and walked out. I was so
impressed with Chiropractic that I went to school to become one. I learned
that the nerve system is the most important system in the body because it
controls everything. And when it's not able to work properly because of
pressure and tension in the spine, your body will break down. Anything can
go wrong when your body can't control itself.
My wife, Sharon, was plagued with headaches. She took headache medication at
least four days a week. Imagine a mom not being able to play or take care of
her daughter because she was afraid of having headaches. After I started to
adjust her, the headaches started to improve immediately, and now almost a
year later, her headaches are only occasional. Lately we played outside with our daughter, Courtney. That seems like a small thing, but it
makes a huge difference to her. And Courtney knows enough to ask me to
adjust her when she hurts her back or ankles after playing soccer or with
her friends. |
